It’s important to avoid contamination if you wish to lengthen the shelf life of your produce. Keeping your jars germ free will ensure a much longer shelf life.
Ensure your jars are washed thoroughly using dish washing liquid prior to starting process.
Preheat oven to 180C or 350F.
To a large pot, place all your jars making sure they can be totally submerged.
Fill pot with hot tap water.
Bring to the boil for 10 to 15 minutes.
Carefully remove from boiling water and drain. (avoid touching insides with utensils)
Place the jars in a large baking tray.
Bake in oven for 20 minutes at 180C or 350F.
In a pan, add hot tap water and add the jar lids. (make sure they are totally submerged)
Boil lids for 10 minutes.
Once jar have been in oven for 20 minutes, remove them and place on heat proof surface.
Drain the water from the lids.
If making jam, add your hot jam to the oven hot jars and immediately screw on the lids firmly.
If your dishwasher is hot enough, avoid step 3 to 6 (boiling jars in pot) and place straight in oven.
