Are you stressed out?
Maybe you’re not cooking enough.
According to Psychologists, cooking is a form of meditation that can help alleviate stress. In fact it’s used as a treatment at a number of health clinics and therapists to help conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and even eating disorders.
Plus there’s the added bonus that when you cook yourself you know exactly what you’re eating, The meals are usually more nutritional and therefore healthier which can help you feel better.
Next time in the kitchen, practice by being more mindful. For example, when peeling fruits or vegetables, truly observe the skin, textures, colours and smells. Be creative with your food. Add your own touches, you don’t have to follow each recipe exactly. Taste everything and analyse each flavour.
Relax, take your time. Like mediation, when you focus on one thing, you clear your mind of all other thoughts and you stop worrying about any future problems. This will help reduce stress and promote a zestier life. Plus you’re rewarded with a great meal.

I find that practicing mise en place and cleaning up as I go is very soothing. I’ve read elsewhere that these practices can appear fussy and a little neurotic. Hell no to that! 🙂

Totally agree about mis en place and cleaning up as I go. I can’t cook any other way. And I am not neurotic either. Honest. Well not too much at all, really. Some say I am, but I’m not. Truly, I say…not at all. They may say that, but it doesn’t bother me–because I am not neurotic. Organized and clean–it’s the way things ought to be. Does that make me a bad person?

PS: Excuse any typing errors. Did I tell you that I am not neurotic?
PPS: LOL. It is the truly ONLY way to cook, at least for me. By the time I am ready to serve dinner, the kitchen is pretty well cleaned and proper except for any last minute stuff. Makes post cleanup a snap!

Love this idea! Sometimes I’m not on the mood to cook but to be able to be healthy I con focus more on what I’m cooking than worrying about what is going on around me

Yes this is very true ! Cooking is relaxing and suppose to be fun . I usually put on some music ( depends on the mood of which kind ) sometimes pour a glass wine and start cooking . I haven’t thought to much of the mindfulness of peeling or textures usually mine comes from the delicious smells coming together .

This is so true, cooking has always been my escape from reality. The scents, textures, shapes and sizes of different ‘foods’ simply come alive and it’s like an art on its own. Seeing all those ingredients in their diversity collide and create a beautiful meal, that’s also healthy. I never thought of it as meditation though I have to admit that’s an interesting way to put it.
